Save the Children in Sri Lanka will hand over 100 houses
to tsunami affected beneficiaries in Ampara district today.
People in Thirukovil, Akkaraipattu and Aliyadigambu will
receive these houses. District Secretary H.M. Herath
Abeyweera will be the chief guest.
Save the Children which has been working in Ampara even
before the tsunami was in operation in the aftermath of the
Asian tsunami. Ampara was one of the worst hit areas and
Save the children was quick to provide relief support to
5000 families and protection for children.
The 100 families who will occupy these houses will also
given household items, rehabilitation kits. Save the
Children has also made plans to support them in recovering
their livelihoods, and also provide hygiene education.
Depending on the skills that the people have Save the
Children will provide necessary equipment to get back to
fishing, agriculture and other small scale trade. This
programme is already under-way in Ampara district.
Work has already started to build 50 temporary pre-schools
and 8 permanent pre-schools and also to rehabilitate and
construct 2 schools affected by the tsunami. Save the
Children has been providing educational material to schools
and pre-schools including school uniforms, shoes, stationery
and other equipment.
Pre-school teacher-training with a special focus on
psychosocial care of children is also part of Save the
Children's intervention. Construction of 150 more houses by
Save the Children is under way in the Ampara district.
