The Government of Japan handed over 11 Container Type Mobile Workshops together with 11 Trailers and a truck worth of Japanese Yen 66.5 million (approximately Rs. 57.2 million) to help rehabilitation works for fishing industry in the tsunami affected areas.
These Container Workshops are to repair the Out Board Motors (OBMs) and other fishing boats/gears damaged by tsunami. Under the project, procurement of raw materials for repair of fiber-glass reinforced plastic (FRP) boats, costs of necessary spare parts of out board motors, and labour to carry out repairs to fishing craft were also provided.

These Container Workshops will be distributed to the Galle, Matara, and Hambantota districts in the Southern Province, Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province, Jaffna, Killinochchi and Mullaitivu in the Northern Province and Gampaha and Colombo in the Western Province.

This assistance is a part of the Rs. 8 billion (US$ 80 million) provided under the Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of a wide range of tsunami-affected sectors including fisheries, housing, power, roads, health, education and water and sanitation sectors. Out of the total grant, Rs. 2 billion has been allocated to the fisheries sector, considering the economical and social importance of the industry.
