Plan Sri Lanka commits Rs. 1 billion for tsunami relief

Plan Sri Lanka announced an increase in its country allocation commitment, responding to the demands of disaster stricken Sri Lanka and the rural communities. Initially Rs. 1 billion (approx. US $ 10 million) has been allocated for tsunami relief work.

Plan will use these funds to help the worst affected people to rebuild their lives by supporting them with resources to reconstruct their homes, recommence their livelihoods, and ensure they have access and resources for education and water and sanitation needs.
Much of the work will be in the Hambantota district, where Plan has had a development program since 1996.
Over 4,500 people are reported to have died in the district.

Plan Sri Lanka has already spent US $ 612,000 (approx. Rs. 60.0 million) since December 26 for immediate disaster response, and to start recovery and reconstruction.

This has gone to the purchase of essential medicine and vaccines and supply of water tanks for camps, generators, dewatering pumps, school supplies and activity books, grants for writing off loans and new loans, funds for bowser rentals, funds to construct latrines in the camps, and food supply to health workers working round the clock.

School kits, including exercise books, pencils, maths sets and crayons for 20,000 children have already been given, and school uniforms for up to 10,000 children and 100,000 booklets for children on health, hygiene and other issues will be distributed.
Plan will continue its support of the National Child Protection Authority (NPA), and will work to address the issue of psychosocial trauma.
