Provides $ 1m Financial Assistance For Tsunami

The
Government of Japan has extended a cash grant of US$ 1
million (approximately Rs. 100 million) to the Government of
Sri Lanka to be utilized for urgently required relief
measures of the tsunami affected areas.
Previously, just after the tsunami disaster the Government
of Japan provided two grants, one in Yen 15,532,000
(approximately Rs. 15.2 million) and the other in US$
100,000 (approximately 14.4 million) as emergency relief.
These grants were used to provide urgently required items
such as tents, blankets, generators and water tanks.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced at the
Tsunami Summit at Jakarta on January 6 a further grant of US
$ 80 million under its Non Project Grant Aid for relief,
rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. This grant aid is
extended especially towards restoring disaster hit areas and
bring normalcy to the country.
The
Government of Japan is further assessing the situation in
Sri Lanka, and would provide ssistance towards
reconstruction and rehabilitation required for restoring the
socio-economic activities in the affected areas.
