Egypt Sends Medical Assistance

Egypt which has always been a close friend of Sri Lanka responded swiftly by rushing in assistance when the tsunami waves struck the country's coastal areas.
Ambassador of Egypt Dr. Amir Kamal Dessouky told the Daily News that Egypt has already sent a consignment of medicine and medical equipment to help the stricken victims.

He said no sooner they were apprised of the crisis in Sri Lanka , he received immediate instructions from the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to look into the immediate requirements of Sri Lanka.. Initially, Egypt offered to send a team of specialist doctors but Sri Lanka at the time said they had a sufficient number of doctors. So, we decided to send the necessary medical equipment and medicine required to Sri Lanka.

The consignment of medicine was airlifted to Sri Lanka by an Egyptian Air Force flight last week. The consignment was handed over to the health authorities at the BIA last week. He said Egyptian medical teams were sent to Indonesia while Egypt has also arranged a financial assistance to the Maldives.
