UNHCR Deputy
Chief to visit Lanka next week |

The
UN Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees, Kamel Morjane
will visit Sri Lanka next week to review the UNHCR's work on
behalf of the people displaced by the tsunami and the
conflict.
He will be joined by the new Director of UNHCR's Bureau for
Asia and the Pacific Janet Lim and the Director of the
Department of International Protection, Erika Feller.
The visiting team plans to meet authorities in Colombo and
in affected areas in the south, east and north from January
18 - 20, the UNHCR said in a release yesterday.
Some 130,000 tsunami displaced people have received UNHCR
shelter and non-food relief items. .
Since
December 26, the refugee agency has distributed more than
20,000 pieces of plastic sheeting, over 25,000 mats, more
than 15,000 articles of clothing and some 8,000 mosquito
nets and kitchen sets, among other items. Three airlifts
from Copenhagen and Delhi have brought in additional
supplies for the displaced people. A fourth airlift of
plastic sheeting from China is scheduled next week while
tents are due to arrive from Jordan.
UNHCR
will airlift portable warehouses from Colombo to its offices
in Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara this weekend.
With a capacity of 1,000 cubic metres each these warehouses
will enable to store more relief supplies from UNHCR and
other UN agencies.
