Movable temporary houses

ZOA Refugee Care Sri Lanka, an NGO committed to the welfare of Sri Lankan refugees, launched its temporary housing project for tsunami victims on Monday in Ampara.
ZOA Country Director, David Verboom, told the 'Daily News' that their low cost 'movable temporary house' can be used till permanent housing is provided.
He said the house is made of materials bought locally and can serve as reasonable shelter until permanent housing is provided. The ZOA is already in the process of shipping 4000 of them to Ampara where they are directly coordinating humanitarian assistance in respect of 20,000 refugee families. In the context of the huge number tsunami stricken refugee families that are housed in school camps, welfare camps and make-shift shelters, the ZOA expected other NGOs also to join the task of addressing the immediate housing problem of the refugees.
In ZOA's opinion, the refugees should be given a free choice to reside where they want to in order to re-start their lives and livelihoods.
To provide this freedom to them, the ZOA has proposed to the Government to distribute movable temporary home packages, Verboom said.

The protective temporary shelter can be set up at any place of the refugee family's option either with friends, relatives or close to their original villages, subject to permission of the relevant government officers, Verboom said.
In the aftermath of the Tsunami, the ZOA provided immediate relief, which includes dry rations, shelter items, household items and water sanitation facilities, to 130,000 tsunami victims in Ampara, Batticaloa, Trncomalee, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts, Verboom said.
