German aid to reconstruct
tsunami hit technical colleges

 

COLOMBO: The German Government has donated 10 million euros to Sri Lanka to be utilised to rehabilitate and reconstruct local technical training colleges destroyed by the tsunami.

The money had been allocated under German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). Eleven technical colleges under the Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training,in the Eastern and Southern provinces which were damaged are expected to be rehabilitated under the programme.

A spokesman of the Vocational and Technical Training Ministry said that the ministry had already developed two of the 11 technical colleges to the status of advanced Technical colleges in each of the provinces.
"Besides , the Ministry is planning to establish a national level state institution for advanced technical studies. The GTZ has donated two million euros for the proposed plan," he said.

The Ministry officials had recently signed an agreement with GTZ officials to establish a vocational and technical university and to construct a college for advanced technical studies, he said.
