The Japanese Government has provided Rs. 68.5 million for the reconstruction of the Hikkaduwa Police Station damaged by the tsunami.

A gymnasium, a reading room, and sufficient accommodation for the staff with sanitary facilities will also be reconstructed.

Reconstruction is expected to be completed by the end of December 2006. Work was officially launched on January 31 with the laying of the foundation stone by Hiroshi Karube, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan and Neville Wijesinghe, DIG Southern Region.
