KOICA team volunteers in tsunami reconstruction

 

An overseas team volunteers of Korea International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) implemented four prominent tsunami reconstruction projects respectively at Matara, Hikkaduwa, Batticaloa, Hambantota, which amount to US $ 84,143, the KOICa said yesterday.

Volunteers carried out the project "Re-establishment of Polhena beach and Improvement of its Environment" successfully under KOICA's assistance during six months at Matara. Under this project, the Polhena beach which was field with debris after tsunami destruction was well cleaned by KOICA volunteers.

They built a new public toilet and a shower-room. Regarding improvement of leisure facilities of the beach, parasol equipment were provided and established a police post which will help in maintaining the security status of the beach. This whole project costs US $ 30,000.

At Hikkaduwa, KOICA volunteers constructed a pre-school building and created a small children's park for children to play freely. A pre-school teacher was also trained during the implementation of the project and in addition teaching materials and some other necessary equipment regarding pre-school teaching were provided. This whole project costs US $ 15,387.

"Tsunami Recovery Support for Refugees" project worth US $ 13,546 was implemented at batticaloa by five volunteers during last five months. Their project was mainly aimed at rehabilitation of tsunami-affected people, recovering of mental health of affected at Batticaloa.

 
 
 
  In accordance, activities were implemented to improve health of the people of three refugee camps and an orphanage, and empowered a computer course at St. Michael College, Batticaloa and a montessori for tsunami affected children was built. This was the first time such a montessori was built inside a refugee camp when considered other tsunami related constructions around tsunami hit areas.

A humanitarian organisation KOICA has paid more attention on displaced that are still remaining at refugee camps eagerly expecting to live under their own shelter.
Soon after the vast destruction caused by the tsunami, the Korean Government supported the Sri Lankan Government and the people in numerous ways through KOICA. The Korean Government has dispatched the National Disaster Medical Team, National Disease Control and Prevention Team, Rescue Workers, Divers and Volunteers and took active part in relief operations in Sri Lanka.

As the same KOICA continues further its projects in helping and assisting tsunami-affected through Korea Overseas Team Volunteers.
So far they have contributed a lot in tsunami reconstruction and rehabilitation programme and projects in tsunami-affected areas.
