The
Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has completed 90 percent of
the restoration work in the tsunami hit coastal belt, CEB
General Manager Ranjith Fonseka told the Sunday Observer.
"In another few days we can completely restore the balance
work", he pointed out.
The CEB was among first infrastructure developers to restore
services in the affected areas. The CEB has estimated its
loss at around Rs. 1,200 million. He said the CEB gave
priority to restore electricity to hospitals, police
stations, State institutions and camps under Phase One of
the rehabilitation work. Later the CEB provided electricity
to houses partly damaged to encourage people to return to
their homes.
As soon as the tsunami hit the country, CEB appointed "15
work teams" to restore electricity.
Another four Additional General Managers were also appointed
to support the teams. "These officers worked round the clock
to restore electricity in the coastal belt which was in a
state of total collapse", he said. Now the CEB was preparing
for the integrated development plan of the Government to
provide electricity in relocating vulnerable towns in the
coastal belt.
