Water Board
Cleans Wells In Tsunami Areas |

The
National Water Supply and Drainage Board has coordinated the
cleaning up of 3855 wells in tsunami affected areas with
support from local authorities, members of the forces,
non-governmental organisations and volunteers, Working
Director NWS&DB Sunil Sarath Perera told the Daily News
yesterday.
Perera said that in addition to cleaning up of wells
purification of water for drinking purposes is also being
done simultaneously.
A special unit has been set up in the NWS&DB which could be
reached by those who wish to get their wells cleaned up and
water purified. The units offers its services 24 hours of
the day and offer expertise and provide chlorine for water
purification.
Volunteer groups interested in getting the wells in their
areas cleaned up and water purified could call the NWS&DB on
Telephone No. 2623623.
The highest number of wells has been cleaned in the North
and the East with 998 wells cleaned in Trincomalee and 800
in Ampara.
The
number of wells cleaned in Jaffna is 545 in addition to 425
in Kalutara, 390 in Galle, 272 in Matara, 336 in Hambantota
and 99 in Mullaitivu 99. The
cleaning up and water purification has been financed by
several institutions, private companies and NGOs. |
