More funds
from the Netherlands to re-build Galle |
|
The
Velsen City of Netherlands with 66,000 inhabitants had
formed a committee headed by Velsen Mayor Peter Cammaert and
had collected over 800,000 Euros, which is equivalent to
over hundred million rupees for the reconstruction of Galle
city, said Netherlands Alumni Association of Sri Lanka (NAAL)
President S.P.C. Kumarasinghe.
Velsen Mayor and his committee collected this amount of
money by performing a marathon musical show with several
famous artistes of Velsen City from 2.00 pm till 11.00 pm on
January 9, which yielded 53,000 Euros.
The request for help by the 30-year-old Galle-Velsen twin
city program spearheaded by the SOS Velsen and the
Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka has yielded
unprecedented response from the Netherlands, Kumarasinghe
said.
The fund raising is not limited to the musical show, but
continues with church collections and other means if fund
raising.
The schoolchildren of the Netherlands swimming and skating
rings have also organised several fund raising events to
assist the tsunami victims in Sri Lanka, said the NAAL
President. Among the donations, a fishing crafts company in
IJmuiden has donated 150,000 Euros to repair and replace
fishing crafts in Galle.
A small township with 75,000 inhabitants have firmly
committed to adopt a fishing village and do a project to
replace and repair all the fishing crafts in that village,
the NAAL President said.
The devastated schools in Sri Lanka are not forgotten said
the NAAL President and added that a chain of primary schools
in the Hague with 29,000 students has expressed the
willingness to rebuild a collapsed school and equip it with
all necessary equipment including furniture.
NAAL President Kumarasinghe emphasised that NAAL will
utilise these funds to support the master plan drawn up by
the Government of President Chandrika Bandaranaike
Kumaratunga to turn Galle into a well-planned city. |
