TUI AG commits Euro 1.25 m for tsunami relief

TUI AG, the largest tour operator in Europe has volunteered to donate Euro 1.25 million towards the long-term development of the some areas affected by the tsunami.
They will focus on rebuilding a village affected in the Tangalle district. The various projects not only help in such areas such as setting up accommodation schools and medical wards, but also provide support for fishermen and farmers in the form of small credits material goods as well as training of medical personnel, teachers and so on.
TUI AG, which has a large stake in Aitken Spence Travels has also decided to help the Aitken Spence Group in its own rehabilitation work.
TUI decided to set up an aid program targeted primarily at long-term support for the crisis region in Southeast Asia.
Long-term targeted aid is urgently needed to secure the future of those affected above and beyond the emergency relief that they are now receiving. as a globally operating travel company we feel we have a responsibility to actively support rebuilding in the areas that have been destroyed.

TUI commitment will be focused on rebuilding a village particularly badly affected by the flood disaster in the Tangalle district on the South coast of Sri Lanka.
This independent aid project will be carried out in co-operation with the relief organization 'Plan International Deutschland ex. TUI will in effect sponsor the community by providing the financial resources for rebuilding over the long-term.
It is moreover our wish that in the future many TUI staff throughout the Group as well as TUI customers support the project. Staff and customers have for example the opportunity through Plan International to accept sponsorship for children in Sri Lanka.
Shortly, Plan International will open an Internet site where sponsors as well as all other people supporting the project will be able to find out the latest information about the aid project.

Considering the serious destruction of large parts of Sri Lanka, TUI will in addition support an initiative of Aitken Spence & Co. TUI has had a share since last year in Aitken Spence Travels, the tourism branch of the travel and logistic company from Sri Lanka. Aitken Spence & Co. is currently arranging aid measures for devastated regions for instance in the northwest of the island. The initiative by Aitken Spence & Co. is an exemplary project by a national company for spontaneous aid. It deserves our full support.
