Minister Seeks Donors' Assistance to Rehabilitate Damaged Temples

The Minister of Buddha Sasana Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka has afforded an opportunity to Buddhist temples not affected by the tsunami disaster and the Dayaka Sabhas as well as donors to assist in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 68 Buddhist temples damaged due to the tidal waves disaster.
This is a sequel to many requests made to the Ministry by well-wishers to assist in the restoration of these temples. The Buddha Sasana Ministry has already set apart a maximum of Rs. 300,000 for the initial restoration work of these temples.
However the damage caused to these temples had been extensive and this amount would not be sufficient to meet the cost of repairs. Most of the damaged temples are located in Hambantota, Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts.
All those desirous of assisting in this task have been requested by the Minister to contact the Secretary of the Buddha Sasana Ministry on 2330890 or the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs on 2327791.
The Minister in a special message making this appeal said that his Ministry has collected all data regarding the damage caused to the temples and according to the data extensive damages have been caused to many temples which the restoration

would require large sums of money. As there are many requests by temples not affected by the disaster and donors to assist the restoration and rehabilitation of these temples, the Ministry of Buddha Sasana has launched a planned program to repair these temples.
The prospective donors have been requested to indicate the type of assistance they would like to give in the rehabilitation process after which the Ministry would take action to establish direct contact with the affected Temple Chief Priests and the Dayaka Sabhas.
The details could be obtained by contacting the Secretary, Ministry of Buddha Sasana or the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs.
