Government Conducts Awareness Workshops
In Tsunami-hit Areas

The President's Office and the Disaster Management Centre are conducting workshops for Provincial and District Administrators in the 13-tsunami affected districts.
The theme for these workshops is 'Ensuring safer communities and sustainable development through Disaster Management', a release from the Presidential Media Unit said yesterday.

Eight workshops have already been completed in Galle, Hambantota, Matara, Ampara, Trincomalee, Puttalam, Gampaha and Kalutara. The target group includes the Chief Secretary, the District Secretary, Heads of Departments and their officers in the relevant provinces/districts.

The workshops aim at increasing awareness on the recently passed Disaster Management Act No. 13 of 2005; the structure and functions of the recently established Disaster Management Centre and its links with the provincial and district administration; role of the Department of Meteorology as the National Focal Point for Tsunami Early Warning; progress made on the establishment of an Early Warning System for Sri Lanka; and role of the administrator in effectively responding to and managing disasters.

Workshops for administrators to be held in Batticaloa, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Colombo are scheduled for coming week.
