Forty-eight nations at Tuesday's pledging conference in
Geneva have pledged their assistance to the Government
towards its rebuilding efforts to restore the lives of the
people displaced by the tsunami tidal wave catastrophe.
Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama who
represented the Government at this pledging conference, told
the Daily News that a large number of donor countries and
financial organisations agreed to write off their loans to
Sri Lanka.
All pledging nations and financial organisations praised the
Government's prompt action to face this sudden natural
disaster by providing immediate relief measures to the
affected, the Minister said.
Nearly 70 nations participated in this pledging conference
including Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway,
Canada, China, US, Australia, Denmark and Finland.
The
Heads of the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and
International Monetary Fund also attended the conference
chaired by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. Dr.
Amunugama said: "The nations also stated that among all
tsunami affected countries, Sri Lanka is leading in the
rebuilding exercise due to
immediate measures taken
by the Government on President Chandrika Bandaranaike
Kumaratunga's directive. As a result, no famine or death
from infectious disease has been reported in Sri Lanka."
Meanwhile, the World Bank and IMF have stated that they
could immediately respond and provide assistance to Sri
Lanka as a result of the systematic plan formulated by the
Government to face this sudden disaster, the Minister said.
Referring to Dr. Amunugama's speech at this pledging
conference, the nations and the monetary organisations have
pledged to provide more assistance to the Government towards
its rebuilding exercise.
